WELCOME

Hello and welcome to my personal website!

I received my Diploma degree (BSc/MSc) in Production Engineering & Management from Democritus University of Thrace in 2006. Since April 2013, I hold a Ph.D. in the field of computer vision with dissertation topic "Multi–camera systems for Navigation of Robotic Systems and Surveillance". I was a founding member of the Laboratory of Robotics and Automation (a.k.a GryphonLab) where I have been involved as a Computer Vision and Robotics researcher in many European funded projects. Currently, I am a member of the Robotics and Automation group in Aalborg University and the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering working with Ole Madsen.

My research mainly involves theory and applications in Robotics, Computer Vision, Multi-camera Systems, and 3D Reconstruction. More specifically, my research interests include:

  1. Software and hardware integration for mobile robotics
  2. Benchmark definitions for the performance of mobile manipulators
  3. 3D reconstruction applications using multi-view algorithms
  4. Multi-camera vision systems for surveillance of a robot's working environment

A few words about me 

I was born in beautiful Kavala, Greece on 26 October 1983. After finishing high school in 2001 I became accepted to the Department of Production Engineering & Management of the Democritus Univ. of Thrace. I received my diploma degree in 2006 and as I was always fascinated by robotics and the art of photography I decided to pursue a Ph.D. degree in the field of Computer Vision. I have successfully defended on April 8th, 2013 and currently I am working as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and specifically with Ole Madsen's Robotics and Automation group. My broad research interests include 3D reconstruction applications, multi-view algorithms, multi-camera systems and robotics. As a proud researcher of the group of Robotics and Automation and Group of Robotics and Cognitive Systems, I have been involved in several international (European) research projects in the field of robotics, machine and robot vision systems.

Things I am fond of 

I just love the art of photography. I spend my free time outside the lab taking lots of photographs with my two fantastic cameras; the spectacular Nikon D7000 and the retro beauty Nikon FM3A. Still, I enjoy reading cyberpunk and horror literature, especially when it comes from William Gibson, Stephen King and Graham Masterton. Lastly, I am rather fond of beautiful graphic design and typography, jazz music, greek coffee breaks with friends (yes, the ones that can last for hours...) and walks around the city, most preferably where there are elm trees.

RESEARCH

My broaden research interests include Robotic technologies, 3D reconstruction applications using multi-view algorithms, 3D object reconstruction for active perception to assist the navigation of mobile robots, design & development of multi-camera systems for surveillance of a robot's working environment and analysis of crowd dynamics using geometric and bio-inspired techniques. Along with my Ph.D. studies I have worked for various Greek and European research projects presented below.

Involved in the EU/FP7 project: "Learning and Execution of Action Categories (ACAT), FP7-ICT-2011-9", funded by the European Commission – (2013 – 2016).

Position description:
Postdoctoral scientific research and software development for one of the two examined scenarios of the project where a mobile manipulator will execute the assembly of an industrial component using specific action categories. Also responsible for the system integration and the performance benchmarking of the project.

Involved in the EU/FP7 project: "Autonomous Vehicle Emergency Recovery Tool (AVERT), FP7-SEC-2011-1-285092", funded by the European Commission – (2012 – 2014).

Position description:
Scientific research and software development of the algorithms used for the active perception task of the main Deployment Unit. Final task is the determination of the vehicle of interest inside a 3D parking area. All the subtasks including LIDAR scanning and 3D point cloud generation and registration were implemented in ROS and PCL frameworks.

Involved in the following EU/FP6 project: "Autonomous Collaborative Robots to Swing and Work in Everyday EnviRonment (ACROBOTER), FP6-IST-2006-045530", funded by the European Commission – Information Society Technologies (IST), (2007-2010).

Position description:
Scientific research for the study and construction of the ACROBOTER's multi-camera vision system. Primary software developer specialized in the 3D reconstruction task. The main scope of this work was the recovery of the envelope of the robot's working environment in terms of safe interaction with the final user. Some of the tasks implemented in OpenCV environment were image acquisition, feature detection across separate views, and 3D registration and reconstruction of the room.
